Volunteers

Volunteers are a big part of how our research has been able to be completed here in the Edwards lab.  To get experience in the marine science field most graduate students first get exposed to conducting field research, experimental design, data collection, lab management, and data entry as a volunteer.  We need motivated hard-working people interested in research experience that likely involves long hours of repetitive tasks.  Ideally volunteers spend 8 hours or more a week. Much of the field work that the Edwards Lab does is subtidal research, we are especially looking for volunteers that are SCUBA AAUS certified. If you are interested in volunteering here please submit an email titled "volunteer application" with your major, expected graduation date, GPA, availability, and CV to medwards (at) sdsu.edu.

Prospective Students
The Edwards lab is a kelp ecology focused group at San Diego State University based mainly at the Coastal Marine Institute Laboratory (CMIL).  If you are interesting in becoming a graduate student here, both the masters and doctoral programs (paired with UC Davis) are challenging and rewarding experiences.  Make sure the program is a good fit for you and start determining your options early before beginning to apply.  Prerequisites for entering the lab generally are SCUBA certification/AAUS certification if conducting subtidal work, relevant experience in marine science including field classes, field work, and volunteer positions.  A strong background in statistics, marine biology/ecology, phycology (study of seaweeds), and experimental methods/design is recommended.

Students are encouraged to apply for funding (grants, fellowships, scholarships) before applying.  These include the National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship (NSF GRFP), the United State Environmental Protection Agency (EPA STAR), and the The Nancy Foster.

If you are interested in becoming part of the Edwards lab please send an email with CV and summary of research interests to Matt Edwards medwards (at) sdsu.edu.
